Tony Quirk took us on an interesting and entertaining journey through time, back to generations of the Quirk family who’d been fishermen, before a change of direction led to a family business, first as general grocers and then specialising as bakers. At the time that Tony’s family life was spent Living Above the Shop, the family home was above No 8, Michael Street in Peel.
There were amusing reminiscences of some of the scrapes Tony himself got involved in as a young lad, and tales of the day-to-day give and take with staff and customers. It was particularly interesting to see how his personal story and that of his family was set in the wider context of the community and helped to give a glimpse of the broader social history of Peel and its people.
The stories and the photographs Tony showed during his presentation brought back many memories for the audience which were shared after the talk itself had come to an end. The warm conversation and smiles all round showed how much everyone appreciated the presentation.
Grateful thanks to Tony Quirk for such an enjoyable afternoon.
